What does prenatal care entail?

You receive comprehensive pregnancy care when you choose Dr. Carlos Hernandez Obstetrics & Gynecology. The staff offers compassionate and expert care when it comes to:

  • Regular checkups

  • Screening tests for mom and baby
  • Treatment for common pregnancy ailments

  • Labor and delivery counseling and support

Dr. Hernandez works to ensure that you and your baby have optimal care at every point during your pregnancy.

How frequent are prenatal visits?

Dr. Hernandez sets up a customized schedule for you, depending on your health, the baby’s health, and your age. Most healthy women should plan to see Dr. Hernandez:

  • Once every month for weeks 4-28
  • Once every two weeks for weeks 28-36
  • Weekly visits from week 36 through delivery

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, your visits are typically scheduled more often. You benefit from a solid schedule of prenatal visits whether this is your first or third child.

What should I expect at prenatal visits?

At your first prenatal visit, you undergo a pelvic exam as well as a Pap smear. You also undergo blood and urine testing. The team records your weight, blood pressure, and height, while Dr. Hernandez estimates your due date.

At future visits, you won’t undergo pelvic exams. You may just have your blood pressure, height, and weight checked as well as your abdomen measured and the baby’s heart rate recorded. Periodic ultrasounds are scheduled to check on the baby’s development, sex, and health.

High-risk pregnancy patients may require additional testing. Dr. Hernandez can let you know what tests he recommends given your unique needs. High-risk patients are those who have pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes or lupus, who are pregnant with babies with health issues, or who are older than age 35.
